Into copyright? Two event reminders

Summer Kat-fun is always copyright fun
If you happen to be in London over the next few days, and fancy some copyright fun, here are two events for you:

The temporary copies exception and the three-step test post Filmspeler (Bristows - Thursday, 13 July)

Organised by the British Literary and Copyright Association (BLACA), this event provides an opportunity to explore in detail the implications of the recent decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in Filmspeler, C-527/15 [Katposts here].

Simon Clark (Bristows) and Ben Allgrove (Baker & McKenzie) will reprise the respective roles they played on opposite sides the last time that the CJEU considered the temporary copies exceptions in PRCA, C-360/13, in 2014.

They will consider the different approaches taken in each case and where we now stand with the temporary copies exception under Article 5(1) of the InfoSoc Directive and the three-step test in Article 5(5) therein.

Chaired by Stephen Edwards, the event will take place at Victoria Embankment offices of Bristows.

6:15 pm for a 6:30 pm start.

If you're interested in attending, email Simon Clark here.

The Pirate Bay communicates to the public: are there any more online infringement questions to be answered? (Simmons&Simmons - Tuesday, 18 July)

With its recent decision in Ziggo, C-610/15 (The Pirate Bay case, here), the CJEU has clarified that a platform like The Pirate Bay might be regarded as primarily liable for unauthorised acts of communication to the public within Article 3(1) of the InfoSoc Directive.

But what are the broader implications of this much-awaited judgment, both in relation to the construction of this exclusive right, and the liability of online platforms for third-party infringements?

Jointly organised with Simmons&Simmons, this IPKat event consists of a panel discussion devoted to analysing the judgment, as well as its significance for both EU copyright law and the policy discussion currently unfolding in Brussels.

Moderated by Simmons&Simmons IP partner Darren Meale, the panel will be composed as follows:

Time? 5:30 pm for a 18:00 pm start.

Attendance is free, but registration is required. There are few tickets left, but hurry up and register here.

No comments:

All comments must be moderated by a member of the IPKat team before they appear on the blog. Comments will not be allowed if the contravene the IPKat policy that readers' comments should not be obscene or defamatory; they should not consist of ad hominem attacks on members of the blog team or other comment-posters and they should make a constructive contribution to the discussion of the post on which they purport to comment.

It is also the IPKat policy that comments should not be made completely anonymously, and users should use a consistent name or pseudonym (which should not itself be defamatory or obscene, or that of another real person), either in the "identity" field, or at the beginning of the comment. Current practice is to, however, allow a limited number of comments that contravene this policy, provided that the comment has a high degree of relevance and the comment chain does not become too difficult to follow.
